upon moving to gotham to be with her uncle, she became obsessed with batman and wanted to do the same work he does. when she was 18, she tried to join the fbi as a field agent but was dismissed. after that, the police department hosted a ball that bruce wayne and many people of his caliber were attending. she made a feminine version of the batman costume, planning to crash the ball as "batgirl" to spite jim, who laughed her off when she said she wanted to work in law enforcement like him.

when she arrived, a criminal called killer moth had already crashed the party, grabbing bruce as a hostage, planning to steal the charity proceeds. barbara was forced to actually act as batgirl, tackling killer moth to try to rescue bruce. bruce allowed her to "rescue" him so he can sneak off and put on the batsuit. he returned to the fight as batman with robin, finding that killer moth overpowered barbara. he was forced to let the criminals go to spare barbara's life, chiding her harshly for her actions and tried to dissuade her from actually being batgirl. she was upset from hearing harsh criticism from a man she idolised for so long but she wasn't deterred. despite his disapproval, he sent dick grayson to gift her some batarangs, who subtly revealed to her that he was robin. barbara was able to solve the case, and shortly after, batman swore her in an oath and also revealed his identity. barbara continued her career as batgirl for a year, until it came to an abrupt end when the joker showed up at her house, shooting and paralyzing her before kidnapping her uncle. bruce rescued jim, but barbara couldn't continue her career in vigilantism. recognizing she could no longer be the kind of superhero she had been, barbara instead devoted all her time to developing one of the world's most complex and powerful computer systems and set to work accumulating information, renaming herself to oracle. eventually, she formed the birds of prey, a team of female heroes she employs as agents for her. of these agents were catwoman and, at first, orphan. she still walks in a lot of adaptations because ableism i guess
