one night, when she was a teenager, she woke up in the middle of the night to see batman choking the shit out of her dad, but he backed off once he saw her and left. she chalked this up to a dream, but soon after found out that her dad was a supervillain. she decided she had to do something herself, made herself a costume, and called herself "spoiler" to. spoil his plans. she teamed up with batman and robin to leave clues for the police to find her dad's hiding places.

when tim was forced to give up being robin because his dad found out, stephanie demanded bruce take her in as his new robin. he didn't think she was a good enough fighter but he accepted her anyway. eventually, he threw her out of the role for constantly disobeying his orders. she got mad at him and decided that she needed to prove herself to him by solving a mission he couldn't. in the process, she got kidnapped and was tortured for information about batman that she refused to give up. bruce eventually found her but she died in the hospital from her extensive injuries. it was later revealed (or retconned, more like) that she didn't actually die, she was just injured to the point of death. when bruce temporarily dies, cass, the only batgirl at the time, gets overwhelmed and gives stephanie her batgirl costume so she can operate as batgirl. once bruce is back, they share the batgirl mantle.
